Newsletter – September 2024

September 2024 Newsletter

A note from Amy Tuschen our National Director

Monday, 2 September is Labor Day, let’s take a moment to honor the hardworking individuals who make our communities thrive.

Our historical note, September 15, 1945, marked a pivotal moment in the history of the U.S. Army Signal Corps. On this day, the Army Security Agency (ASA) was established, as the Army’s Signals Intelligence Branch. In 1972, the ASA was merged with the Intelligence Support Agency (ISA) to form the Intelligence and Security Command (INSCOM).

Before the ASA’s formation, communications intelligence collection assets were divided between the Signal Security Agency and theater commanders, leading to inefficiencies. The ASA was created to consolidate these efforts and provide centralized control over signals intelligence units.

The ASA quickly grew to become the largest Army intelligence organization, overseeing a vast network of field stations and personnel worldwide. It played a crucial role in gathering information on foreign governments, military forces, and other potential threats.

We are pleased to update our members on activities happening within the SCRA with this newsletter. We continue to grow our membership and chapters and take feedback from chapter officers and active members to continue improving our organization. If you have feedback or other information you want on the site or that you would like to receive updates on, please send it our way.

Message from our Chapter Mentor, COL Charles D. (Dean) Smith

As a SCRA Chapter Mentor, I work with many chapters across the world to reestablish or rebuild membership in SCRA. We have noticed a challenge with email addresses and membership details. To ensure you receive information from SCRA HQs, we ask that you update your member profile at https://signalcorps.org and you set as your primary main email address a civilian address with a .com extension. Our email delivery system has significant kickbacks from .mil email addresses. Also, if you have moved or are planning to move during this PCS cycle, you can find a chapter close to you to affiliate with. Just update your member profile to show which chapter you want to be associated with. Thanks for all you do as SCRA members. Please reach out to me at chapters@signalcorps.org with any questions or if there is any way I can help.

– Request for Assistance – we need help to create workflows and processes. If you have any experience with WordPress or Office365 workflows, and are interested in assisting, please contact me at chapters@signalcorps.org

National Board update:

In conjunction with AFCEA’s Technet Augusta Conference, our National Board met including our COLs awards board. Some items that resulted from that meeting are that we are reorganizing the board by adding new members and forming an Advisory Council. Stay tuned for more updates.

Upcoming Events/Chapter News:

Annual Reports

As we enter the 4th quarter of the year, chapter leaders please be on the lookout for the annual report submission email reminder.  Keeping up with your activities throughout the year will simplify this process once they are due.

Museum Updates:

As a reminder our 501(c)3 partner, the Signal and Cyber Museum Society (SCMS), is our designated donor for contributions submitted to the SCRA. These can be direct support at events, opting to donate versus receiving membership incentives, or you can directly support at SecureOurStory.org If you are interested in volunteering with the SCMS to help bring back the Signal Corps Museum to the Augusta area, which permanently closed in February 2021, or to contribute to the virtual museum, reach out to ExecDirector@FGHMS.org

The following questions were asked on our website regarding the museum, so here are the answers: Could we get an update on the museum?  The Signal and Cyber Museum Society is working with the leadership at Fort Eisenhower, GA, and the Center for Military History to properly secure an Army-approved location.  Once we purchase a building, the SCMS will proffer it to the Army and the Garisson at Fort Eisenhower will take ownership of it; the exhibits will be rebuilt and established.

Where will it be, is there a projected opening date, is there a monetary goal for donations and how close are we to that goal? We are hoping to raise funds to purchase the former National Science Foundation building adjacent to gate 1 on Gordon Highway. This will cost approximately $4 million, and we have so far raised approximately 10% of that in contributions and pledges. There is no projected opening date as it is all contingent on fundraising and the building is still available to purchase from the current owner.

Is there an info brief on what it’s projected to look like both physically and virtually? To see the artist renderings and the location of our future virtual museum, go to SecureOurStory.org

As we celebrate Veterans Day this week, I want to share with you some nuggets of interest around this holiday.

  1. Armistice Day was recast as Veterans Day in 1954. Today we know the day as “Veterans Day,” but until 1954 it was known as Armistice Day, officially recognizing the armistice agreement that ended WWI on Nov. 11, 1918. Even though WWI was hopefully termed “the war to end all wars,” it was anything but. By 1954 Americans had served in both WWII and the Korean War. Armistice Day was changed to Veterans Day on June 1, 1954.
  2.  Veterans Day was previously celebrated on the fourth Monday of October instead of November 11. In the late 1960s, Congress passed a law intended to stimulate the economy by adding more three-day weekends. They thought it would help encourage travel and other recreation. The “Uniform Monday Holiday Act” made Washington’s Birthday, Memorial Day, Columbus Day, and Veterans Day all Mondays. However, Veterans Day was designated as November 11 – 11th month, 11th day, 11th hour – for historic reasons. So, in Sept. 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a law returning Veterans Day to Nov. 11 starting in 1978.
  3. It is “Veterans Day,” not “Veteran’s Day.” The Department of Veterans Affairs notes that Veterans Day is a day for recognizing the veterans with us right now. “Veteran’s Day” with an apostrophe would instead be a day that belongs to veterans.

Newsletter – October 2023

A note from our National Director, Amy Tuschen

This month in Signal Corps history: After World War I, the Army’s cryptographic elements were transferred from Military Intelligence to the Signal Corps at Fort Monmouth. On October 5, 1942, the Cryptographic Division transferred from Fort Monmouth to Vint Hill Farms Station, VA, and became known as the Signal Corps Cryptographic School. It trained both officers and enlisted students in two shifts until the new facilities were completed in May 1943.

Newsletter – April 2023

A note from our National Director, Amy Tuschen:

As we just celebrated Women’s History Month, I thought I would share a bit of women in history and their support of the Signal Corps. In 1917 when the U.S. entered WWI, General Pershing issued an appeal to recruit 150 women telephone operating experience, fluent in English and French to join the U.S. Army Signal Corps Female Telephone Operators, AKA “Hello Girls”. These ladies served from 1918 – 1919 in parts of Europe; it took almost 60 years for them to be recognized, receive benefits, and be designated as the first female veterans of the U.S. Army. Learn about this and other Signal Corps history by subscribing and following the Fort Gordon Historical Museum Society (FGHMS) on YouTube @fortgordonhistoricalmuseum2219
