The Gold Order of Mercury (GOM) Award is the highest honor and reserved for those special few individuals who have sacrificed their lives in service to our Nation.  This award honors any Signal Soldier who died as a direct result of injuries or illness sustained while on duty in service to the Nation. This award is presented at no cost to the family and by an appropriate SCRA Leader.

Medal:

This award is a Gold medallion, suspended from a ribbon.  Gold, a most precious metal, represents the highest award for service in the Signal Corps Regimental Association.

Front of Medal:  The figure in the center is the Greek mythological figure of Hermes, also known as “Mercury” distinguished by his winged sandals, a winged hat, and the caduceus, as staff entwined with serpents, shown in motion embodying his role as the “Messenger of the Gods.  The figure is standing on a globe representing the global nature of communications and a banner inscribed with “certa” and “ceto” meaning “Swift and Sure”. Inscribed with the words US Army Signal Corps Regimental Association across the top and “ORDER OF MERCRUY” along the bottom. 

Back of Medal: Imprinted with the awardee name and serial number of the award, surrounded in the laurel wreath of victory. 

Ribbon: The award is suspended from an orange ribbon with a white stripe in the center, representing the regimental colors of the US Army Signal Regiment.

Purpose:

The Gold Order of Mercury (GOM) Award recognizes the highest honor and reserved for those special few individuals who have sacrificed their lives in service to our Nation.  This award honors any Signal Soldier who died as a direct result of injuries or illness sustained while on duty in service to the Nation. This award is presented at no cost to the family and by an appropriate SCRA Leader.

Criteria:

  • Honorable service prior to award
  • Awardee has died in the Line of Duty as a result of service to the Nation
  • Awardee was a member of the US Army Signal Regiment

Approval Process:

  • Nominator documents the loss and confirms the status for submission
  • Nominator confers with the local chapter for support
  • Nominator submits award recommendation through the local chapter process and coordinates with the National Awards Coordinator for direct submission to National Awards Committee
  • Chapter Leaders processes the award nomination through the National Awards Coordinator
  • Nominator or Chapter Officer submit information and proposed citation via the SCRA Webpage detailing the conditions of the loss
  • National Awards Coordinator coordinates with the Office of the Chief of Signal to confirm Line of Duty
  • Once approved by National Headquarters, the Awards Coordinator confers with the local chapter or SCRA Member for appropriate presentation

Presentation of the Award:

  • Awards should be presented at the earliest opportunity in an appropriate setting
  • A member of the Board of Directors or a Chapter Presidents should present the awards when possible.
  • Presenters should make every effort to make the presentation professional and memorable (read a citation, take photos, etc.).
  • Appropriate Settings include Memorial Ceremonies, Celebration of Life ceremonies, Fallen Comrades Ceremony, etc.

This award is presented to the posthumously and shall be used by the unit to provide family members recognition of their Soldier as a Signal Regimental Soldier. This award is at no cost to the unit.

The awarding of the Gold Order of Mercury automatically includes the option to award the Gold Wahatchee to the spouse. This is also at no cost, please provide name of spouse in email if applicable.
