The Mercury Medal for Achievement is awarded to recognize individuals who contribute, through their achievements, to the overall improvement, readiness, and capabilities of the Signal Corps Regimental Association, thereby improving the US Army Signal Regiment.

Medal:

This award is a medallion, suspended from a ribbon to be worn around the neck. The Associations’ Achievement Medal, it ranks below the service medals and represents the significant actions required to maintain the Signal Corps Regimental Association.

Front of Medal:    The wings on the award represent the Wings of Mercury, in Greek mythology known as the Messenger of the Gods. This represents the Swift and Sure delivery of communications around the world indicative it the Signal Regiment.   The Semaphores represents the close tie to the US Army Signal Regiment.   The medal is inscribed with Signal Corps Regimental Association on the top. and Mercury Medal for Achievement Scrolled on the bottom.

Back of Medal: Imprinted with the awardee name and serial number of the award.

Ribbon: The award is suspended from an orange ribbon with a white stripe in the center, representing the regimental colors of the US Army Signal Regiment.

Purpose:

The Mercury Medal for Achievement (MMA) recognizes SCRA members who, through their achievements or significant acts, distinguish themselves in ways that stand out in the eyes of the recipient’s seniors, subordinates, and peers alike and contribute to the promotion of the Signal Regiment and the SCRA. This is not a Regimental Award, but an Association Award given for individual achievement supporting both the local Chapters and the SCRA activities.  As an achievement award, there is no length of service requirement.  The MMA ranks below the Bronze Order of Mercury in level of precedence.

Criteria: 

  • Demonstrate recognizable achievements which promote the SCRA and by extension, the Signal Regiment.
  • Be a current active SCRA member and affiliated with a local chapter, where possible.
  • Be of outstanding moral character and demonstrate the qualities of a professional Signal Corps Professional. 
  • Nomination must be submitted by a separate member, who is an active member of the SCRA

Example of activities which may be considered:

  • Stand up a New SCRA Chapter as a Charter Officer
  • Reinitiate a SCRA Chapter and serve as a Key Leader during the process
  • Organize or participate on Signal Ball committee
  • Serve as a guest speaker representing SCRA at events in the local area
  • Hosting Events including social events, membership drives, Signal Balls, Orange Calls, Christmas exodus events, Hail and Fairwells, etc, fundraising events
  • Volunteer as a committee member of SCRA Chapter boards
  • Hosting learning events, LPDs, Brown bag lunches, Certification training, panels, or any additional informational event that benefits members of SCRA
  • Volunteering for any charity program or event that benefits members of SCRA, the local community, or the Military
  • Publish Papers, Articles, or Products in Reputable publications regarding the Signal Regiment or SCRA

Approval Process: 

  • Nominator documents achievements for submission.
  • Nominator confers with the local chapter and the candidate to confirm if they have previous awards
  • Nominator confirms the candidate is an active SCRA member and confirms SCRA member number
    • See Member Directory to locate all current members and member numbers
    • A Gift Membership may be purchased for a candidate if their achievements are of such a nature to warrant such action
  • Nominator submits award recommendation through the local chapter process or coordinates with the National Awards Manager for direct submission to National Awards Committee
  • Chapter President approves the award* (this authority is delegated by the Awards Committee for this award)
  • Nominator or Chapter Officer submit justification via the SCRA Webpage detailing the achievements of the candidate
  • If previously approved by the Chapter President, and meets all award criteria, Awards Coordinator processes the award.
  • If not previously approved by the Chapter President, Awards Coordinator sends packet to the National Awards Committee
  • Once approved by National Headquarters, select the medal options and purchase through the awards store links provided by the National Awards Manager

*If a Chapter President is unavailable to approve the award, and by exception, the award may be approved by a COL of the Signal Regiment who is an active SCRA member and has knowledge of the achievements.

    • Awards approved by a Chapter President or COL of the Signal Regiment are subject to screening by the National Awards Committee and may be denied if determined the level of Achievement is not consistent with the approved criteria. The National Awards Committee reserves the right to revoke the approval authority of a Chapter President or COL of the Regiment who does not adhere to the Awards Criteria and spirit of the award.

Presentation of the Award: 

  • Awards should be presented at the earliest opportunity in an appropriate setting.
  • Chapter Presidents should present the awards when possible.
  • Presenters should make every effort to make the presentation professional and memorable (read a citation, take photos, etc.).
  • Appropriate Settings include Signal Balls, Award Ceremonies, Retirement Ceremonies, Change of Command/Responsibility, Chapter Awards Banquets, or Orange Calls.
